The City of Cold Lake Parks department floods and maintains two outdoor ice surfaces during the winter months. Outdoor rinks with shelters, lighting, boards and nets are located at Nelson Heights Park in Cold Lake North, and 49 Street and 54 Avenue (just north of Holy Cross Elementary School) in Cold Lake South.
Both outdoor rinks operate using a "flag" system. Flags posted near the entrances tell users whether or not the ice surface is safe to use.
A red flag means the ice surface is closed. Do not enter the rink when the red flag is up. There may be exposed concrete, unstable ice or other hazards.
An orange flag means the ice surface is open. Use the ice at your own risk and always wear a helmet and protective padding.
The Parks department removes snow from the outdoor rinks and oval when staffing and resources permit. Sidewalks, trails and pedestrian intersections are the department's top priority for snow clearing, so it might take a day or two after a large snowfall for our crews to get to the rinks. Crews will make every attempt to have all ice surfaces cleared on Fridays so they are available for the weekend.
Both rinks are equipped with outdoor lighting to illuminate the skating surface. The lights automatically turn on each afternoon at 4 p.m. and turn off at 10 p.m. Once the lights have turned off, the rink is closed for the night.
