Cold Lake, AB - The City of Cold Lake is pleased to see the Government of Alberta has taken an important step forward in the much-needed infrastructure improvements of Highway 28.

The April 24, 2023, announcement by the Honourable Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, of a $5-million investment to complete an engineering study for the busy Highway 28 was welcomed by the City of Cold Lake as a sign that the highway’s importance is recognized by the Government of Alberta.

From Edmonton to Cold Lake, Highway 28 is an important economic corridor connecting the City of Cold Lake and the surrounding industry with Albertans in communities and municipalities up and down the highway, across the province and beyond. The City is part of the Northeast Alberta Alliance for Growth and Opportunities (NAAGO), a group of 40 municipalities and Indigenous communities, which has been advocating for investment and upgrades for Highway 28.

“Improvements have been needed for years and with this commitment from the Government of Alberta, we can look forward to important upgrades that will ensure Highway 28 is safe and efficient,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “This highway is an important corridor for industry and residents alike, and the news that we are moving towards having Highway 28 being included in the province’s capital plan is very positive, not only for our community, but for many others in our region.”

Highway 28 is an important economic corridor and upgrades will ensure that Alberta’s northeast can reach its full economic potential. Current proposals to be included in the engineering work include possible upgrades to intersections, creating passing lanes between Smokey Lake and the Town of Bonnyville, and twinning the highway between the Town of Bonnyville and the City of Cold Lake.
