Phase 3 expansion at Kinosoo Beach fully funded

Cold Lake, AB – At its regular meeting this week, City Council added funding to the third phase of expansion at Kinosoo Beach.

The project, which was initially estimated at a total cost of about $3 million, was partially approved by council in the 2021 budget for $1 million, with the hopes that grant funding might be secured for the project. Project tenders closed at $2.7 million and, since the project did not win any grant money under the federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, council decided to fund the project so that the Kinosoo Beach Master Plan can continue to move forward.

“To think that this was voted one of Canada’s top 25 beaches in 2008, before we were able to invest in the amenities there, is amazing,” Cold Lake Mayor, Craig Copeland said. “I would love to see where it stacks up now that our council’s vision for the beach is nearing its completion. It’s a tremendous asset for our residents and a very large draw for visitors.”

Kinosoo Beach also received recognition as one of Alberta’s top 10 beaches in 2021.

The Kinosoo Beach Master Plan was adopted in 2014, and construction of the splash park began the next year, with work on the first major phase of the master plan starting in 2016. The second phase of expansion at Kinosoo Beach went on to win Project of the Year from the American Public Works Association in 2018, an award accepted by the City’s Infrastructure Services Department for its role in managing the planning and construction for the project.

“It has been amazing to see this come together from the very early planning stages to a vision on paper and, after Phase 3, it will be very close to its final reality,” Copeland said. “It’s something our entire community can be proud of and it is only going to get better yet.” The Kinosoo Beach Master Plan is available online at www.coldlake.com.
