Cold Lake, AB – There was a heavy police presence at the Energy Centre after the discovery of a person with a weapon was found on the second floor.
On Friday, Feb. 9, at approximately 8:30 a.m., two people were involved in an incident with a weapon on the second floor of the Energy Centre, near the back of the Reid Field House. A municipal enforcement officer patrolling the area encountered the two individuals and discovered the weapon, at which point RCMP were called for assistance in the encounter.
“This incident could have gone very wrong,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “We are looking at ways of providing more security for patrons, but we’re struggling to keep up with this escalation of potential violence in our community.”
RCMP detained one individual. All users and staff within the facility remained unharmed. Other agencies attached to the Energy Centre, including the Cold Lake High School and Portage College were notified of the incident as it was happening, out of an abundance of caution.
