Cold Lake, AB – The costs and responsibility of cemetery maintenance was discussed at length during the April 9 council meeting.

In response to a request for financial support from the St. Dominic Cemetery Society due to the critically low inventory of burial plots available for its parishioners, council granted $70,000 to put toward concrete work for headstones and curbs between two of the cemeteries that the society oversees: Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery and Saint Dominic Roman Catholic Cemetery. The funding can be split between the cemeteries as the society sees fit.

“A lot of work goes into keeping cemeteries up and running,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “There’s a lot of sweat equity that volunteers put in to maintaining these areas of community of which they are looking for a helping hand.”

This funding is expected to give the cemeteries a 10-year plot supply and sale, extending the functionality of the cemeteries for the next decade.
