Cold Lake, AB – The City of Cold Lake has been awarded the contracts to deliver curbside collection, depot collection, and receiving and processing services for the recycling of residential single-use products, packaging, and paper products.
Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation came into effect in November of 2023. The regulation requires the producers of such products to take on the financial burden of their recycling programs. The City of Cold Lake’s recycling program successfully bid to deliver the program on behalf of the producers, who are represented by the not-for-profit agency, Circular Materials.
“We are proud to have won this first phase of the contract as it signals that the City is running an efficient and cost-effective operation,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “A big thanks goes out to the staff who provide the service and who helped put the bid together. Winning the confidence of private industry is a strong sign of support for the City’s operation.”
The City of Cold Lake’s agreements for the collection and sorting of material under the EPR program are in place for Phase I of the implementation of the program, which will last until Sept. 30, 2026. The City of Cold Lake is currently working on a bid to continue the service under Phase II of the program, which will begin on Oct. 1, 2026. There will be no change to residential utility bills.
Under the agreements, the City of Cold Lake will continue to manage the curbside pickup program, depot sites, Material Recovery Facility, and provide the customer service and promotion and education of the program with support from the industry representative, Circular Material.
Information on utility bills and utility accounts can be found on the City of Cold Lake’s website at www.coldlake.com/utilities.
