Cold Lake residents may apply for a permit to keep hens in approved coops on private property. Potential hen keepers must satisfy several criteria to be considered for a permit, including (but not limited to):

• Being at least 18 years old, 
• Successfully completing an accredited hen keeping training program,
• Notifying all adjoining neighbours of their intent to apply for a hen keeping permit and to keep hens on their property,
• Keeping no more than 4 hens on their property (roosters are prohibited on non-agricultural land),
• Providing and maintaining a secure coop with warmth, ventilation, food and water, veterinary care and opportunities for hens to socialize with one another,
• Not selling eggs or meat harvested from their hens.
• Applying for, being granted, and paying the associated fee for a City of Cold Lake Urban Hen Keeping permit.
