The City of Cold Lake's Animal Care and Control Centre is the first point of contact for Cold Lake Peace Officers and Cold Lake residents who find stray animals within the City’s corporate limits.

Pets with identification will be kept for a minimum of ten days, while animals without identification will be kept for a minimum of three days before being transferred to an animal adoption agency. The owners of impounded pets will be charged a $60 intake fee and a $20 care fee for each day of impoundment, along with any veterinarian fees incurred for the animal.

The Animal Care and Control Centre hours are: Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm. The facility is currently temporarily closed on Saturdays, and regularly closed on Sundays and holidays. The facility is located at 5008 62 Street in Cold Lake South and can be reached at 780-639-6406.

Stray animals

If you notice a stray pet in your neighbourhood, contact Cold Lake Municipal Enforcement to pick up the animal at 780-594-1345. Regardless of size or temperament, animals should always be handled by trained professionals. 

Lost pets

If your pet is lost, contact Cold Lake Municipal Enforcement with it's description and the location from where it went missing, so officers can keep an eye out during their patrols.

Animal Home Placement Program

The Animal Home Placement Program unites animals with permanent homes after their stay at the Animal Care and Control Centre. In order for an animal to be eligible for the program, they must meet the following criteria:

• Minimum holding periods have been met (for either an identified or unidentified animal) as per the Animal Care and Control Bylaw.
• Animal care organizations are unable to accept the animal in the next 30 days.

The first priority is reuniting animals with their owners, followed by transferring them to an animal organization that specializes in animal adoptions, such as a humane society, SPCA, rescue, or shelter.

When spaces at these organizations are full, and unable to accept any more animals, the Animal Care and Control Centre will open applications to place the animal into a permanent home instead.

Once an animal is eligible for a permanent home placement, it will be posted to the Cold Lake Animal Care and Control Facebook Page for up to 14 days to look for a suitable home placement. Those interested in receiving an animal for home placement must attend the Animal Care and Control Centre in person to apply and pay any appropriate fees before receiving the animal.

Once the animal licence, transfer acknowledgement form, and fees have been paid, the animal will be placed with the applicant. Please see fees below.

Fees

If the person receiving an animal lives in the City of Cold Lake, an animal licence fee must be paid:

• $20.50 for a spayed/neutered animal
• $77.50 for an unaltered animal

As well as the following placement and transfer fee:

• $160 per cat
• $240 per dog
