The way the City collects organic waste at the curb has changed. Each household that has a black waste cart has received a new green organics cart. When organic collection resumes in the spring of 2025, all organic waste must be placed inside the green cart in order to be collected by our Automated Collection Vehicles. For more information, see the Organics, Recycling & Waste Collection Guide or check out the FAQ video below.
Organic waste is collected at the curb bi-weekly between April 1 and November 15. Organics should be set out on the same day as your regular garbage collection, on the opposite weeks of recycling collection. During winter months, organics can be dropped off at the compost site located at the Transfer Station, free of charge. Refer to the Collection Schedule to determine your collection day.
Organic waste doesn't need to be bagged - you can put it directly into your green cart. However, if you want to keep your cart tidier, organics can be contained in heavy paper or compostable bags before being placed in the cart. If you are going to bag it, only approved compostable bags with the following logos will be accepted:
Organics contained in plastic shopping bags or popular, name brand bags labelled "compostable," but not containing one of the above logos are not compostable in the City of Cold Lake organics program and will not be collected.
The following materials are not accepted as part of the curbside organics collection program. These items should be placed in household waste or recycling.
