Fire Prevention Week (FPW) is an international fire safety initiative that is part of October - Fire Awareness Month and this year, FPW and Sparky the Fire Dog are celebrating 100 years of bringing awareness and fire safety to communities everywhere. Cold Lake Fire-Rescue is proud to be a partner with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and help to educate the Cold Lake community on fire safety during Fire Prevention Week - Oct. 9 to 15.
The message for 2022 is "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape." and Sparky has the following tips to plan your escape:
The extra step:
One thing that should always be checked is the expiration date on both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. While most detectors are certified for 10 years, the lifespan and efficiency can be reduced if occupants smoke or vape within the home, as oils from both will coat the devices' detecting surfaces. It's a good thing to keep your detectors clean.
For our Cold Lake Fire-Rescue crew, Fire Prevention Week is everyday of the year.
Thank you to everyone who joined the the Cold Lake firefighters for a BBQ on October 11. Over 200 people visited either the Northside (718-10 St.) or Southside (5201-55 St.) for some delicious food and tour of the fire halls. Everyone asked a lot of questions on what they could do to help with fire prevention and keep their families safe.
Deputy Fire Chief Norm Hollis wants to remind everyone that they are welcome anytime to either of the firehalls, especially if they want to learn more about fire prevention in their homes. The Cold Lake Fire-Rescue will also come to your home (or business) to do a fire inspection and provide some suggestions to help be better prepared for the unexpected. This service is free of charge and members can also help with suggestions for safe exits for anyone with mobility issues.
We are pleased to announce that we had 245 entries into the 2022 colouring contest and will be announcing the winners soon.
