2nd Annual Lakeland Dark Sky Celebration

Come to Pinehurst Lake Campground in Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area from 4:00PM - 10:30PM to partake in fun family activities and learn about the Lakeland Dark Sky Preserve.

4:00PM-6:30PM: Family Activities & Displays

  • Nocturnal Wildlife Displays & Information
  • Rocket Building & How to make a Feather Stick for Fire Starting
  • Crafts & Art Activities
  • Face Painting
  • Free Hot Dog Roasting & Refreshments
  • Information & Displays on Importance of Dark Sky

5:00PM-6:30PM: Solar Observation

  • The Active Sun, learn about the sun and look closer with a solar viewing telescope with astronomer Jean-Pierre De Villiers 

6:30PM-7:30PM: Sharing Traditions

  • Lac La Biche Canadian Native Friendship Center's elder shares traditional stories around the campfire

7:30PM: Fall Astronomy

  •  The Fall night sky, at dusk. Covering basics of astronomy, but also cosmology and deep-sky objects with astronomer Jean-Pierre De Villiers 

9:00PM: Night Obervations

  • Night observing with telescope and astronomy binoculars with astronomer Jean-Pierre De Villiers 

Participants are welcomed to bring their own telescopes or set of binoculars for the astronomy viewing talks. With the moon being Waxing Crescent, there will be little moon-light to interfere with stargazing.
